A collection of irish historic sites not to be missed when visiting Ireland.
The geotour starts at Hill of Tara. Also known as known Temhair na Ri in gaeilge, the Hill of the Kings is the reputed sit of the kings of Ireland.  The Palace of the Boyne is an internationally important neolithic complex of chamber tombs, standing stones, henges and other prehistoric enclosures. The site covers 780ha and contains around 40 passage tombs as well as other prehistoric sites and Since its estate in 1185, Malahide Castle is the oldest castle continually occupied by one familly until 1975 with the exception of 1649-1660. The estate survived losses such as the Battle of the Boyne when fourteen members of the family sat down  Magnificient and large Robinsonian style garden with a strong emphasis on the informal tradition of mixing a nice plant collection within the natural landscape of its environment. Originally built in 1142 on a site of an earlier native fortification called a cathair, Cahir Castle is one of the largest castles in Ireland. Although it felt in ruin in the late 18th century, the castle was partially restored in 1840. Located on the road to Youghal, Barryscourt Castle was the home of the Barry family from the 12 to the 17th centuries and constitutes a fine example of a 15th century tower house with 16th century additions and alterations.  A number of historic sites are located around the top of the hill. The Hill of Slane has a special Christian significance as St Patrick lit a Paschal fire on this hill top in 433. However this place was hugely significant long before St Patrick ever set f Trim Castle is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland and was constructed over a thirty year period by Hugh de Lacy who took possession of it in 1172. The Castle is noted for the part it played in the filming of Braveheart. The Glen of Two Lakes is a medieval monastery site founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. Destroyed in 1398 by english troops, a 33 metres tall round tower, a celtic cross and other ruins of interest remain. Nearby are the lakes featured in John Ballyhack Castle is a large tower house thought to have been built c.1450 by the Knights Hospitallers of St. John. A nice example of fortified medieval castle where the Counts of Desmond used to live.  There took place the Battle of the Boyne between King William III and his father-in-law, King James II, July the 11th of 1690. Both kings commanded their armies in person and approx. 1500 soldiers were killed...  The site of the cathedral has a number of medieval church ruins, an ogham stone and a number of early Christian and medieval grave slabs. The cathedral has a fine romanesque west doorway, a magnificent 13th century east window and a spectacular ro Athenry Castle was built by Meiler de Bermingham in the 13th century during the Anglo Norman colonization. Much of the medieval town wall survives (1211), together with the keep of the castle (1235) and part of the Dominican priory (1241). Founded around 1500 by the O Flahertys, Aughnanure Castle is one of the 200 tower houses built in County Galway by wealthy and land owning families, mainly of Gaelic but some of Anglo Norman stock. Boyle Abbey is a Cistercian House founded in 1161 by Maurice O'Duffy. In 1218 the church of Boyle Abbey was solemnly consecrated. In 1235 the english forces took possession of the abbey, seized all the goods, vestments and chalices belonging t Carrowmore is reputedly one of the oldest and largest Stone Age burial sites in Western Europe with its greatest concentration of megalithic monuments. Over 60 tombs have been located by archaeologists so far. , Originally built in the 13th century as a castle, the house was altered in the 18th.
